Two Canes Hoping To Follow In Morgan's Footsteps

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Maxwell Football Club (MFC) named University of Miami senior linebacker Sean Spence and junior defensive back Ray-Ray Armstrong to the 2011 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List on Tuesday, July 5. 

UM legend Dan Morgan is the only UM player that has won the Bednarik Award.  Morgan claimed it in 2000, along with the Nagurski Trophy & Butkus Award.

The award is given annually to the sport’s best defensive player. Last season, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson earned the honor over fellow finalists Nick Fairley (Auburn) and Da’Quan Bowers (Clemson) .

Following the 2010 campaign, Spence received the Most Valuable Player award, as well as being named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team.  The Miami-Northwestern HS alum started all 13 games for the Hurricanes in 2010 and ranked second on the team and fifth in the ACC with 111 tackles.

He recorded a season-high 14 tackles against Clemson, as well as three tackles-for-loss against Georgia Tech.  Overall, he tallied a team-leading 16 TFL, which was fourth most in the conference. 

Armstrong returns for his junior season with a 2010 Second Team All-ACC award under his belt.  He registered a team-high tying three interceptions for the Canes. The Sanford  native scored one of the team’s two defensive touchdowns with a 22-yard interception return against Florida A&M and racked up nine tackles against both Ohio State and Florida State.
