Behind the Facemask: Andrew Swasey

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–They are stories of perseverance. Stories about growing up, becoming men and being a part of a family. One-by-one, we hear from them. These are the Miami Hurricanes…
Andrew Swasey | Defensive Back | Junior | Miami, Fla.
The U is tradition. I love the school. I grew up a big University of Miami fan. This is my dream school. I just love the players that came through here, especially Sean Taylor – that’s my favorite player. Before every game and practice I watch his highlights. Sometimes it can be emotional for me, just watching his highlights.
Competition is something I love. I’ve always competed for everything, when I wanted this or wanted that, I always had to compete with my brothers and sisters.
Playing football has given me a different outlook on life. It’s not just an easy way to make money – it’s hard, because you have to compete against everyone. You want to be the best at whatever you do and whatever position you play.
You never know when you might get hurt.
I secretly wish that I was able to be closer to my dad when I was little.
When I was six years old, I was bad. Always in trouble, messing with girls in class (laughs).
Division I football is a dream. I can’t wait to be playing against Maryland. Every night I’ve had dreams – I know it sounds crazy – but I’ve been having dreams about us playing. I think we’re gonna have a winning season this year.
Everybody can criticize but not everybody has an answer.
I didn’t think I would be here being coached by my dad. I thought I wasn’t coming here, because I had offers from other places. But at the end of the recruiting process, for some reason, some coaches were fired, some teams said I took too long, and I decided to come here, which was the best decision for me.
I was raised in Carol City. I was raised by my mom, because my dad was at junior college in Kansas. I used to talk to him all the time, but I never used to see him that much.
We are all blessed.
Legacy is the University of Miami.
