Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Sunday afternoon the pairings and seeding for the eight participating teams in this year’s ACC Baseball Tournament, set to begin Wednesday, May 25, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
With the University of North Carolina sweeping the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, and the University of Miami going 2-1 against Duke over the weekend, the Hurricanes (34-20, 19-10 ACC) finished the year fifth overall in the league standings – and fourth in the Coastal Division.
No. 5 seed Miami is matched in Pool A, with No. 1 Virginia (45-9, 22-8), No. 4 North Carolina (44-12, 20-10) and No. 8 Wake Forest (25-28, 15-15).
Miami – the 2008 ACC Baseball Tournament Champs – will open its ACC Tournament run against UNC on Thursday, May 26, at 11 a.m. The Hurricanes will play Virginia on Friday at 11 a.m., and conclude pool play with Wake Forest on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The championship game will match the winner of Pool A against the winner of Pool B on Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m. The Hurricanes open practice session will be Tuesday, May 24, from 2-2:50 p.m.
During the regular season, Miami went 6-3 against its three competitors in pool play, including a 5-1 mark against Wake Forest and North Carolina, respectively.
In addition to six teams currently ranked among the nations’ top 20 (Virginia, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Clemson and Miami), the tournament will feature five teams that were among the top nine in the most recent NCAA RPI report (No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 UNC, No. 4 Florida State, No. 8 Georgia Tech and No. 9 Clemson). Miami was ranked 18th, and NC State 30th.
The city of Durham will be hosting the tournament for the seventh time. Virginia won the ACC Championship the last time it was held at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in 2009, topping Florida State by a 6-3 score in the championship game.
