INDIANAPOLIS– University of Miami women’s tennis student athletes Bianca Eichkorn and Anna Bartenstein have been selected to participate in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships from May 25-30 in Palo Alto, Calif.

The selections were made by the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Subcommittee and announced Wednesday evening on NCAA.com.

Eichkorn and Bartenstein make up two of the 64 individuals selected for singles play, while together the teammates are make up one of 32 doubles teams in the field. Eichkorn will serve as the No. 7 national seed in singles play, while the pair has been slotted into the No. 5-8 national seeding group.

Prior the singles and doubles championships, Eichkorn and Bartenstein will lead their team in the NCAA team championships. No. 7 seed Miami (18-6) is serving as one of 16 host schools for the first and second rounds that will be held the weekend of May 13-15. Regional champions will advance into Round of 16, which will be held from May 20-24 at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center, the same site as the singles and doubles tournaments.

Eichkorn and Bartenstein are currently ranked sixth and 36 respectively in the ITA’s national singles rankings. Together, they are ranked as the nation’s No. 5 doubles pair.

Eichkorn, a senior from Tengen, Germany, is in the final month of one of the most successful careers in program history. She recently became the all-time leader in singles wins at Miami when she won her 132 match in the Hurricanes’ ACC semifinal match against North Carolina. Two days before becoming the program’s winningest player, Eichkorn was named the 2011 ACC Player of the Year after going a perfect 11-0 against conference opponents in Miami’s No. 1 singles position. On the season, she is 32-6 overall and 21-2 in dual match play in UM’s top spot. She has won 25 of her last 27 singles matches dating back to the middle of November and more recently has won 17 of her last 18 in both singles and doubles.

Bartenstein’s 23 wins this season are second only to Eichkorn’s on UM’s roster. Serving at Miami’s No. 2 singles player, Bartenstein, a junior from Graz, Austria, has gone 18-4 in dual match play and went 10-1 against ACC opponents during the regular season. She enters the NCAA Championships having won eight straight and 15 of her last 16.

Against ranked opposition this season, Eichkorn is 15-4 while Bartenstein is 10-3. In doubles play, Eichkorn and Bartenstein have teamed to go 28-4 overall and 21-2 in dual match play in the Canes’ top position. The pair went 10-1 against ACC opponents and 12-3 against nationally ranked foes. Heading into next weekend’s regional, the tandem has won 10 straight and 16 of their last 17.

This will mark Eichkorn’s third appearance in the singles tournament and Bartenstein’s first. Last season, Eichkorn advanced all the way into the quarterfinal round.
