CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the seventh straight year, the University of Miami women’s tennis team will host an NCAA Regional at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
It was announced Tuesday afternoon that the fifth-ranked Hurricanes earned a No. 7 national seed and will host No. 2 seed Texas, No. 3 seed USF and No. 4 seed FIU in the tournament’s first two rounds on May 13 and 14.
“We have our work cut out for us,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We take great pride in being a national seed and being a host school…the girls earned and deserve that. But now its about preparing for a tough regional.”
The Canes (18-6, 9-2 ACC) will play FIU (13-6) on Friday, May 13 at 1 p.m. after Texas (16-7) and USF (11-11) will play in the first match at 10 a.m. The regional final is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
Miami has advanced out of NCAA regional play and into the Sweet 16 each of the last five seasons. This year’s team championship will be held in Palo Alto, Calif. from May 20-24.
“It’s better for us to be playing such strong teams right out of the gate,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “The NCAA Tournament doesn’t start at Stanford, it starts here next weekend.”
The Hurricanes are led by ACC Player of the Year Bianca Eichkorn, who is 21-2 in dual match play in Miami’s top singles position this season. She is currently ranked sixth nationally in singles play and fifth in doubles alongside teammate Anna Bartenstein.
The Hurricanes are 9-2 at home this season, with the lone losses coming against No. 3 Duke and No. 4 North Carolina.
The field for the NCAA’s singles and doubles championships will be announced on Wednesday.
