Orlando Franklin is First Cane Taken in 2011 Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Former University of Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin was the first Hurricane taken in the 2011 NFL Draft when he was selected by the Denver Broncos with the 46th overall pick. His selection was the highest for a UM player since Kenny Phillips was selected with the 31st pick of the 2008 draft.

Franklin played in 51 games as a Hurricane, making 39 starts from 2007-10. As a senior in 2010, Franklin earned All-ACC Second Team honors after recording 61 pancake blocks and 16 lumberjacks in starting 12 games at left tackle for UM.

He is the first UM player to be selected by the Broncos since offensive lineman Chris Myers was taken with the 200th overall pick in the 2005 draft. He also joins former Canes D.J. Williams, Clinton Portis and Don Bailey Jr. as Broncos’ draftees.

Franklin joins a line that includes tackle Ryan Clady, guards Russ Hochstein and Zane Beadles and center J.D. Walton.
