FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.– Lamar Miller had touchdown runs of 70 and 64 yards to lead the Green team past the Orange team, 30-17, Saturday at Lockhart Stadium in Al Golden’s first Spring Game as head coach of the Hurricanes.
Miller, who finished the day with 10 carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns, would have been named MVP if such recognition existed in the Spring Game.
2001 Champs Honored
Members of the 2001 National Championship team were honored at halftime of the game. Thirty-three members of the team were on hand for the recognition, including 2002 Rose Bowl Co-MVPs Ken Dorsey and Andre Johnson.
Spring Game Stars
In addition to Lamar Miller’s 166-yard, three-touchdown day, several other Canes really stood out on Saturday. Kendal Thompkins led all receivers in catches (7) and receiving yards (81), in addition to hauling in the only receiving touchdown of the day on a pass late in the first half from Stephen Morris. Green’s offensive stars were Mike James (25 rush, 29 receiving, 1 TD) and Allen Hurns (six catches, 64 yards).
Defensively, Sean Goldstein led the Canes with 14 total tackles for the Orange squad, while JoJo Nicolas and Kelvin Cain each had six to lead the Green. Sean Spence and Ray-Ray Armstrong also had big days for the Orange, as each finished with nine sacks. Armstrong added a forced fumble while Spence recorded a sack as well as an interception return for a touchdown.
Stephen Morris (Green) had the best day among the quarterbacks, going 14-for-22 for 140 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jacory Harris (Orange) completed 18-of-30 for 149 yards and two interceptions, while Spencer Whipple finished 3-for-4 with 16 yards splitting time between the two teams.
For the Fans
While a big part of the spring season was about getting better on the field, much of head coach Al Golden’s focus over the last few months has been about connecting with the South Florida community. Saturday’s Spring Game culminated a three-week stretch in which the team held free events in Palm Beach County (Spanish River HS), Miami-Dade County (Traz Powell) and finally Broward County (Lockhart).
Saturday’s BankUnited FanFest turned out to be a big success, as 11,274 came out to watch the Canes wrap up their spring. An autograph session with the current players was held prior to the game, as well as several other interactive activities were featured throughout the stadium prior to and during the action on the field. Afterwards, several hundred fans waited around to spend a little time with the current and past Canes along the sidelines.
Coming Home
A number of Hurricanes had a homecoming of sorts today as a tenth of UM’s roster hails from Broward County. Brandon McGee, who hails from Plantation High, had a first half interception, while Brandon Linder played well on the line for the Orange squad.
