The Hurricanes easily won all six singles matches in straight sets – many of which finished in under an hour – before winning all three doubles matches by a score of 8-2.

“I was really happy with how methodical the girls played today,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We came out focused and detail-oriented and it showed in the scores. It’s never easy to win 6-0, no matter who the opponent is.”

In anticipation of inclement weather expected in the area, the two teams agreed to start the match with singles play.

Gabriela Mejia was the first to put the `Canes on the scoreboard, quickly sweeping Erika Mrazkova in the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-0. That win was followed shortly thereafter by No. 16 Bianca Eichkorn’s 6-1, 2-0 (ret.) win over Justine Humair in the No. 1 position and Brittany Dubins’ 6-0, 6-1 victory over Virginia Augustin at No. 6.

The next two points were won by Melissa Bolivar in the No. 5 position and No. 99 Anna Bartenstein in the No. 2 spot, with Bolivar beating Cassie Bergeson, 6-1, 6-0, while Bartenstein took care of Marlene Ryan, 6-0, 6-0.

The last singles match to finish before doubles play got underway was at No. 3, where No. 99 Danielle Mills prevailed over Natasha Basma, 6-2, 6-1.

The Hurricanes’ success in singles carried over to doubles, where Miami continued to control the action with three 8-2 wins. Eichkorn and Bartenstein – the 46th-ranked team in the country – defeated Ryan and Augustin in the No. 1 spot, Bolivar and Mejia downed Basma and Mrazkova at No. 2 and Rizzolo and Mills defeated Bergeson and Phillips at No. 3.

“I’m very excited about this start, especially the way the new girls came out and competed,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “And it was nice to see the leadership we got today out of Bianca and Anna at the top of the lineup. Those two really set great examples for the rest of the team.”

The `Canes will now turn their focus to next weekend’s ITA Kick-Off, to be held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Miami will play host to Arizona State, South Carolina and FIU in the two-day tournament set for Jan. 29-30. On Jan. 29, ASU and South Carolina will play at 10 a.m. before the `Canes face FIU at 2 p.m. Sunday’s schedule will feature a consolation match at 10 a.m. with the championship match to follow at 2 p.m.
