Miami Women to Face Maryland in College Park

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will face the Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference road game Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Comcast Center.

Miami has lost its past two games, at home to No. 7 Duke and at Wake Forest. Against the Demon Deacons, the Hurricanes fought all the way back from a 19-point second-half deficit to take a three-point lead with five minutes to go. However, Wake Forest scored 11 straight points and the `Canes were unable to mount another comeback.

Sophomore Shenise Johnson had another stellar performance as she scored a game-high 19 points and had nine rebounds. She also had seven steals, helping Miami score 27 points off turnovers in the second half, after recording zero in the first half. The ACC’s leading scorer, Riquna Williams also added 17 points, while senior Diane Barnes scored 10.

A Look at the TerrapinsMaryland holds a 2-2 record inside conference play with wins over both Virginia and Boston College. In its last outing it fell to the 10th-ranked Tar Heels, 75-64 this past Sunday.

The Terrapins are led by Diandra Tchatchouang who is averaging 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Lynetta Kizer, Lori Bjork and Tianna Hawkins all average double-figure scoring at 12.2, 10.7 and 10.2 points per game respectively. Dara Thomas leads the team with 5.8 assists per game

Maryland is averaging 69.8 points and 44.7 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 44.0 percent (467-1062) from the floor, 33.1 percent (102-308) from beyond the arc and 62.7 percent (220-351) from the free throw line. The Terrapins also register 6.1 steals and 3.9 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 59.8 points per game and a shooting percentage of 36.2 (399-1102).

The SeriesMaryland holds an 8-1 series lead over the Hurricanes, including six straight. The last time Miami defeated the Terrapins was on Dec. 29, 2002 at the Miami Holiday Tournament. Last season, the `Canes fell 89-65 to the then No. 5 ranked Maryland squad. Riquna Williams tied for a game-high 17 points and Lamese James added 16 points of her own in the final regular season game of the 2008-09 campaign.
