CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Miami juniors Yasmani Grandal and Chris Hernandez have been named to the 2010 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA All-Atlantic Region Team, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Thursday. Grandal was also named a ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-America selection.

The Atlantic Region was well represented at the national level, as Grandal was one of 12 First-Team All-Region players that were also named to one of the three ABCA All-America teams. Grandal serves as the first team catcher on the all-region squad, while Hernandez is one of three starting pitchers named to the association’s second team.

Grandal recently wrapped up one of the most productive seasons in University of Miami history, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in batting average (.401), slugging percentage (.721) and on-base percentage (.527). He also turned in one of the best defensive seasons for a `Cane, closing out the year with an impressive .994 fielding percentage.

Hernandez leads the ACC with a 2.64 ERA, while ranking second in wins (10) and opponent’s batting average against him (.221), third in strikeouts (110) and fifth in innings pitched (105.2). In addition to his ABCA Atlantic Region honor, Hernandez has also been named a All-ACC Second Team performer as well as a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America selection.

Grandal’s ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-America honor adds to his growing list of postseason awards. He previously has been named a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, the Golden Spikes Award and the Johnny Bench Award. He has now earned first team All-America honors by five different major publications this postseason, as well as earning a Rawlings Gold Glove on Thursday.

Also in the past month, Grandal has been named ACC Player of the Year as well as NCWBA District III Player of the Year. He was also recently selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
