Baseball America’s Preseason Al-America Teams
DURHAM, N.C. – University of Miami junior catcher Yasmani Grandal has earned his second All-America honor of the 2010 preseason, garnering second team honors by Baseball America on Friday.
Grandal emerged last season as one of the top power hitters in the Atlantic Coast Conference, leading the Hurricanes and all ACC catchers with 16 home runs. The Miami native led the `Canes with a 1.081 OPS in 2009 en route to earning All-ACC second team honors. He finished his sophomore season ranking second on the team in slugging percentage (.599) and total bases (118), while collecting 45 RBI and 48 runs scored in 59 games.
In his two seasons in Coral Gables, Grandal has 23 home runs, 73 RBI and a .978 fielding percentage in 97 career games. After hitting .234 as a freshman in 2008, he improved his average by 65 points last year to .299. Over the summer, Grandal was a key member of Team USA during its championship run at the 2009 World Baseball Challenge.
Ten Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes were named to the All-America team, including three first-team selections in Jarrett Parker (Virginia), Deck McGuire (Georgia Tech) and Kevin Jacob (Georgia Tech).
Baseball America annually polls major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, 11 of the 15 college players drafted in the first round last June appeared on Baseball America’s preseason All-America list–eight of them on the first team. And for the second year in a row, 11 of last year’s preseason All-Americans played for teams that reached the College World Series.
Previously, Grandal was named a Louisville Slugger First Team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Miami opens its 2010 season at Alex Rodriguez Park on Friday, Feb. 19 against Rutgers. For ticket information for the 2010 baseball season, call 1-800-GO-CANES or visit www.hurricanesports.com.
