2010 ACC Week-by-Week Football Schedule
Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released the 2010 football schedule today and the University of Miami football team will again play a challenging schedule highlighted by games against eight 2009 bowl participants.
The Hurricanes will face five teams that finished in the final Associated Press and USA Today football polls last season, including two Top 15 teams in Ohio State and Pittsburgh in the first three games.
Miami will play six homes games at newly-named Sun Life Stadium. UM will play three of its first four games on the road. The eight postseason teams from 2009 on Miami’s 2010 schedule are: Ohio State (Rose Bowl), Pittsburgh (Meineke Car Care Bowl), Florida State (Gator Bowl), North Carolina (Meineke Car Care Bowl), Georgia Tech (Orange Bowl), Virginia Tech (Chick-Fil-A Bowl), Clemson (Music City Bowl) and USF (International Bowl).
Miami opens its season by hosting Florida A&M on Thurs, Sept. 2 in the ninth meeting between the schools. UM has won the last seven meetings in the series, including a 48-16 win last season at home. The Rattlers are coming off a 2009 season which saw them finish 8-3 and second in the MEAC conference. Florida A&M is the only Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team on the UM schedule in 2010.
An anticipated road trip to Columbus, Ohio to face 2009 Rose Bowl winner Ohio State is on slate in the second week of the season. The Hurricanes and the Buckeyes will meet Sept. 11. It will be the first meeting since the 2002 Fiesta Bowl and the fourth overall meeting in the series. Ohio State finished 2009 ranked No. 5 in both the Associated Press poll and USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
A second Thursday night game in 2010 with former Big East foe Pittsburgh is on tap for Sept. 23. Miami will travel to Pittsburgh for its 32nd meeting all-time with the Panthers. That game will be nationally televised by ESPN at 7:30 p.m.
Miami’s ACC opener comes in week five when the Hurricanes travel to Clemson on Sat., Oct. 2, which will be the Hurricanes’ first trip to Clemson since 2005. The last three meetings have all gone to overtime with the Tigers winning last season in overtime in Miami, 40-37.
The rivalry between Miami and Florida State returns to Miami on Sat., Oct. 9. Last season, the Hurricanes won a thrilling Labor Day Monday night game in Tallahassee, 38-34. In the all-time series, Miami holds a 31-22 lead.
UM’s third ACC game is road trip to Durham, N.C. to face Duke on Sat. Oct. 16. Miami leads the series 6-1 lead after winning in Miami last season, 34-16. The `Canes have won the last six meetings.
A second straight ACC Coastal divisional game follows the Duke game as Miami hosts North Carolina on Sat., Oct. 23. UNC leads the series and has won the last three meetings against the Hurricanes. The Tar Heels won last season’s meeting in Chapel Hill, 33-24.
Miami then hits the road for its third consecutive ACC Coastal Division meeting at Virginia in Charlottesville on Sat., Oct. 30. This will only be the seventh game between the two schools, as Miami holds a 5-2 lead in the series after winning 52-17. Last time in Charlottesville, quarterback Jacory Harris rallied the Hurricanes with two late touchdown tosses – one in overtime as UM won 24-17.
Maryland opens up the month of November for Miami as the Terrapins head to South Florida on Sat. Nov. 6. The teams will meet for the first time since a 14-13 Terrapin win in College Park in 2006. It will be only the second meeting between the teams since Miami joined the ACC. The Terrapins lead the all-time series, 8-7.
Defending ACC Champion Georgia Tech will serve as Miami’s road finale when the Hurricanes and Yellow Jackets meet at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Sat., Nov. 13. The Yellow Jackets have a 10-5 lead in the series, but the `Canes snapped a four-game losing streak to Georgia Tech with a 33-17 win last season.
The Hurricanes wrap up their ACC slate by hosting Virginia Tech on Sat., Nov. 20. The Hokies won last season’s meeting in Blacksburg, 31-7. Virginia Tech finished ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press poll and USA Today Coaches’ Poll after going 10-3. Miami still leads the series, 17-10.
For the second straight season, Miami will finish the regular season with USF. The Hurricanes will host the Bulls on Saturday, Nov. 27 for just the third meeting in the series. Miami has won both meetings with the Bulls, including last season’s 31-10 win in Tampa.
Miami finished the 2009 season, 9-4, after an appearance in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
The ACC Championship Game will be played on Sat., Dec. 4 at Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, in Charlotte, N.C.
