MIAMI, FLA. – Members of the University of Miami men’s basketball team participated in the Miami-Dade Parks “Fit to Play, Fun for Life” summer camp at Oak Grove Park on Thursday.
Senior Adrian Thomas and recent graduate Lance Hurdle spent time with more than 100 campers, speaking with them and signing autographs. It marks the second year that the UM Athletic Department and the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) is supporting the Miami-Dade Parks program held at various sites throughout the county.
“The camp was cool,” said Thomas, a 6-7 forward for the Hurricanes. “The best part was interacting with the kids and asking them what they wanted to be when they grew up. Everybody had big dreams, and all the kids smiled the whole time and were very energetic.”
The Miami-Dade Parks “Fit to Play” program is designed to provide a safe place for kids to engage in a variety of sports and physical activities, laying the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. It is designed to teach kids good health habits in a fun environment, while addressing topics such as exercise and fitness, nutrition, stress management, tobacco prevention, injury prevention and safety information.
In addition to UM men’s basketball, members of the Hurricanes’ football, baseball, women’s soccer and swimming & diving teams have also participated in “Fit to Play” camps this summer, while members of the football, volleyball and women’s basketball team are expected to participate in the camp on August 6 at Arcola Park (1680 NW 87th St., Miami, FL 33147).
