April 28, 2009
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 13th-ranked University of Miami baseball team dropped its final mid-week game of the 2009 season, falling 10-1 to North Florida Tuesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
After taking a 1-0 lead after two, Miami (29-15) fell behind 2-1 in the third and 6-1 in the fifth before North Florida (18-24) eventually pulled away for the nine-run win.
Miami starter Jason Santana (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season, striking out five but allowing a season-high six earned runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Sam Robinson allowed one uneared run in 1 2/3 innings in relief of Santana, before Kevin Youst, Travis Miller and John Housey finished out the game for UM.
Antonio Franzese started for UNF and allowed one run in two innings before Mike Gottlieb (1-0) came on in the third, tossing a scoreless frame to pick up his first win of the season. From there, four UNF pitchers – Phil Rorabaugh, Spencer Jones, Ty Pryor and John Frawley – combined to toss six scoreless the rest of the way.
Brian Wilson went 4-for-6 with three runs scored for UNF while Preston Hale went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored and T.J. Thompson finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Chris Herrmann (2-for-4) had UM’s only two hits until Harold Martinez and Dave DiNatale each singled in the ninth.
A fielding error by Osprey shortstop Sam Perry allowed Herrmann, who had just doubled to left-center, to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the second.
A two-run homer by Hale in the top of the third gave UNF a lead it would eventually hold onto.
The Ospreys went up 5-1 in the fifth when Thompson smacked a three-run homer to right, scoring Hale and Wilson. Moments later, UNF added another run when Michael Gropper singled home Justin Preckajlo to put the Ospreys up five.
UNF added another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to close the scoring at 10-1.
The Hurricanes will make their northernmost trip of the season this weekend when the team heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College in a three-game series, May 1-3.
