Women's Tennis Concludes Match with USTA Juniors

Feb. 19, 2009

Coral Gables, Fla. – Miami took four-of-six singles matches while winning two-of-three doubles matches to conclude their exhibition match with the USTA National Junior Team on Thursday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The doubles matches began with the UM team of sophomores Julia Cohen and Laura Vallverdu defeating Beatrice Capra (Ellicott City, Md.) and Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla.), 8-3, at the first doubles position. That was followed by the USTA team pulling a win off at the No. 2 position with Lauren Herring (Greenville, N.C.) and Grace Min (Lawrenceville, Ga.) defeating UM’s Michaela Kissell and Alessa Waibel, 8-6.

The No. 3 doubles position win by Miami’s Bianca Eichkorn and Gabriela Mejia allowed the `Canes to take a 1-0 lead into the singles matches. The UM duo defeated Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Chanelle Van Nguyen (Miami, Fla.), 8-1.

In the singles portion of today’s contest, Miami used four wins to collect the team victory, 5-2.

Chi Chi Scholl (Pompano Beach, Fla.) began the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Claudia Wasilewski of the Hurricanes at the six slot. Wasilewski appeared to be suffering from an illness prior to the match.

Miami’s Cohen wasted little time defeating a very-talented Allie Will at the No. 1 position on the strength of a 6-1, 6-1 line, while Kissell used 6-0, 6-3 scores to defeat Bolender at the three spot.

In the No. 4 position, it was Miami’s 6-1, 7-6 come-from-behind win by sophomore Bianca Eichkorn that served as the match-clinching point over the USTA’s Min. Mejia had a three-set victory over Herring at the No. 5 position – 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.

The final match of the day was an exciting one as Capra downed UM’s Vallverdu in a three-set thriller on scores of 0-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Miami will now board a plane tomorrow morning headed for the Great Dallas Metropolitan area in Texas where they will meet the 7th-ranked Baylor Bears (Feb. 21) and the 21st-ranked TCU Horned Frogs (Feb. 22). Meanwhile, UM moved up to 10th in the latest Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings released Thursday afternoon.
