Coral Gables, Fla. – The first day of the University of Miami Women’s Tennis Fall Invitational went smoothly for all participating student-athletes on Friday as UM players collected wins in five of six first round singles matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

With student-athletes from schools all around the state of Florida such as FIU, UCF and Florida State, the Miami women knew they would have to step up their play this weekend with a total of five ranked players taking part in the first-year tourney directed by UM eighth-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews.

Sophomore Bianca Eichkorn led things off for the Hurricanes as she quickly raced past UCF’s Elvira Scott in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-1 in her opening round encounter on the court. The 109th-ranked player in the ITA preseason polls, Eichkorn never trailed in game points throughout the match. She will most likely take on her first ranked opponent since Oct. 24 when she battles Florida State’s Lauren Macfarlane tomorrow afternoon.

Macfarlane, ranked No. 53, cruised to a surprisingly easy victory over her first day’s opponent Liset Brito (No. 79) from FIU in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Brito and the Golden Panthers of FIU are under the direction of former UM All-American Melissa Applebaum, serving as interim head coach across town from her old stomping grounds in Coral Gables.

Jenna Osborne also had an easy straight-set win for the Orange and Green on Friday, as the South Africa native took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Katie Orletsky of UCF. The win for Osborne now gives her a 5-1 record on the year while she has won four of her last five matches overall.

In other singles round play for the `Canes, junior Claudia Wasilewski earned a hard-fought three-set win over Jenny Frisell (UCF) with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Also playing well was freshman Alessa Waibel who took a three-set marathon from Christy Core of UCF, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Fellow freshman Gabriela Mejia took her opening round match from Andrea Yacaman of UCF, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, while teammate Lauren Greco dropped her opening match to Alexis Rodriguez of UCF, 6-3, 7-6.

In doubles play for the Hurricanes, the opening round was less than desirable for Yaroshuk-Tews and her staff. The Hurricanes dropped all three doubles matches in which they took part.

Bianca Eichkorn and Jenna Osborne drew the first match as they were be felled by FIU’s duo of Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo, 8-1. The next match consisted of UM’s Claudia Wasilewski and Gabriela Mejia dropping to FIU’s Alyona Tsutskova and Maria Dolores Pazo, 8-5.

A close match ensued in the final stretch of doubles as the team of freshmen Alessa Waibel and Lauren Greco fell to Maria Vallasciani and Maria Spenceley, 8-6, in one of the best doubles matches of the day for any of the opening round competitors.

The action continues tomorrow with doubles draws set for 10 a.m. back at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Miami. Once again, admission for the event is free while concession stands will be open for all to enjoy throughout a much-anticipated second day of action.
