University of Miami women’s tennis sophomore Jenna Osborne collected a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Morrissey (William & Mary) to win the Flight E main draw championship at the 2008 William & Mary Invitational at Busch Courts.

Osborne produced the Hurricanes only main draw championship in their opening weekend of action. She cruised to a straight-set win (6-2, 6-3) over host William & Mary’s Maria Morrissey. Last season, Osborne saw action in just two matches, but in her first action back in over a year the South Africa native has already registered a 3-0 record.

In the consolation rounds, the `Canes were represented heavily in both singles and doubles play.

Teammates Bianca Eichkorn (#109) and Michaela Kissell (#49) faced off against each other in the consolation finals of Flight A. Eichkorn defeated Kissell in a long match on scores of 5-7, 7-6, 12-10.

Claudia Wasilewski knocked off Helen Cunningham of Richmond 7-6, 6-0 to claim the consolation finals crown in Flight C. Also playing in the consolation round of Flight C was freshman Alessa Waibel. She would fall to William & Mary’s Katie Kargl in straight-sets 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, freshman Gabriela Mejia and Osborne downed the team of Ohio State’s Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey, 8-5. That allowed the `Canes duo to grab the championship of the consolation in Flight B play.

In Flight A consolation doubles, Michaela Kissell and freshman Lauren Greco fell to W&M’s Ragini Acharya and Katarina Zoricic, 8-3 in the third place match. Eichkorn and Waibel fell in the fifth place match to the team of Lauren Cash and Jacqueline Matabah (Boston College), 8-5.

Once again, it should be noted that two of Miami’s top players, Laura Vallverdu (No. 14) and newcomer Julia Cohen (No. 25) did not participate this weekend. Both will be in action for the Hurricanes in their next tournaments opportunity next weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California.
