Miami Football Works through Hottest Day of Camp Tuesday
Aug. 5, 2008
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second straight day, the University of Miami football team worked out in shells at the Greentree Practice Fields, completing the team’s final workout before going to full pads on Wednesday.
“All around it was a pretty good day,” head coach Randy Shannon said. “We worked on a lot of punting drills today as far as overloads, double-games and different fronts like that because I think that is going to be a vital key as far as what we are trying to get done on special teams and the punting game. You can win or lose a game in those types of situations.”
After back-to-back days of slightly cooler practices, the temperature picked back up Tuesday morning in South Florida as the Hurricanes worked through a heat index in the mid-to-upper 90’s. Shannon said the team is taking extra precautions to deal with the extreme heat throughout practice.
“One thing we do is take breaks during practice. That is all you can do. We tell them to hydrate in between drills and hydrate when you aren’t participating in a drill. That’s part of camp. Usually you have more guys go down than we have so I’m excited about that.”
Tuesday morning’s session lasted nearly three hours, the longest practice to date this fall.
On the need for longer practices, Shannon commented, “They are better conditioned and we have a lot of young guys so we need to get more reps. That is the one thing we are really doing – getting a lot of reps in. When you have one practice a day it makes it easier. You get your work in and then you go in and rest the rest of the day. Those guys like it when they are always getting reps and nobody is standing around.”
