Hernandez Named National Freshman Pitcher of the Year

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez has been named the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s National Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He also earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors.

Hernandez became the first freshman in UM history to ever garner any national pitcher or player award.

Earlier this week, he was named one of four finalists for The Roger Clemens Award, given to the nation’s top pitcher. Hernandez is the first ever freshman to be named a finalist for the award.

Hernandez is 11-0 with a 2.65 ERA. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference freshman of the year and earned Louisville Slugger First Team All-American honors. Opponents hit just .218 against him while he struck out 111 in 105 1/3 innings.
