Farah Leads No. 12 UM To Second Straight Road Win
March 23, 2008
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 12th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team downed No. 47 Virginia Tech, 4-3, Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center to complete the sweep of the ACC’s Virginia teams after knocking off No. 50 Virginia on Saturday. With the score knotted at three, senior Romy Farah came through with a thrilling 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (6) win over Jessica Long in the No. 3 position to secure the win for UM.
“I am real happy with Romy’s effort today,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She played with a lot of heart out there, hanging in until the very last point. It is always pleasing to see your senior step up in that spot and lead the team to victory.”
Miami (10-4, 3-2 ACC), after sweeping singles play a day earlier against the Cavaliers, won in four of the top five singles matches to pick up the win over the Hokies despite dropping the doubles point to open the match for the second time in as many days.
No. 21 Laura Vallverdu, No. 73 Farah, Caren Seenauth and No. 104 Bianca Eichkorn all picked up the wins necessary for UM to come home victorious. Vallverdu won easily over Inga Beerman at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, for her ninth win in 10 tries, Seenauth defeated JJ Larson, 6-3, 6-1 and Eichkorn beat Jessica Brouwer, 6-0, 6-3 in the fifth position.
“Virginia Tech played a great match,” Yaroshuk-Tews added. “We didn’t play our best tennis in some tough conditions indoors, but overall it was a great team effort from everyone out there today.”
With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 8-4 against opponents ranked in the ITA Top 50.
The Hurricanes will now return home for their final regular season home weekend when they play host to Duke Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m. and North Carolina Sunday, March 30 at 12 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center where admission is free to the public.
