No. 12 Hurricanes Sweep Singles Matches Versus UVa

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite losing the doubles point and falling behind 1-0 early on, the 12th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team dominated No. 50 Virginia Saturday, 6-1, sweeping all six singles matches at the SnyderTennisCenter en route to its first Atlantic Coast Conference road victory of the season.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
With the win, the Hurricanes (9-4, 2-2 ACC) moved back to .500 in conference play with their seventh win this season against an opponent ranked inside the ITA’s Top 50.
Four of UM’s six singles wins over Virginia (6-8, 2-2) came in straight sets. No. 21 Laura Vallverdu cruised to her eighth win in her last nine matches at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Amanda Rales. No. 49 Michaela Kissell also won easily, 6-1, 6-3, over Maggie Yahner at No. 3, while Caren Seenauth downed Lara Alexander, 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth spot and Claudia Wasilewski nearly shutout Hampton Williams at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.
Miami’s other two singles wins came with No. 73 Romy Farah beating Jennifer Stevens, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 2 and No. 104 Bianca Eichkorn getting past Lindsey Pereira, 6-1, 2-6, 10-7, at No. 4.
Virginia picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to earn the first point of the afternoon. The No. 19 team of Vallverdu and Farah did however pick up a win at No. 1 for UM with an 8-6 victory over Rales and Alexander.
The `Canes will now make the 140-mile trip from Charlottesville to Blacksburg Saturday night prior to taking on Virginia Tech Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
