No. 83 Romy Farah and freshman Bianca Eichkorn were able to pick up crucial wins early on in the No. 2 and No. 4 positions respectively to put Miami up 3-0. From there, the `Canes and Tigers would split the final four matches with sophomore Claudia Wasilewski clinching the match with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Alexandra Luc at No. 6.
“It was an unbelievable team effort today,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I proud of the way we competed out there from top to bottom. It was nice to see the girls come out and respond after such a tough loss at FSU.”
With the win, Miami (8-3, 1-1 ACC) has now beaten Clemson (4-8, 0-2 ACC) seven straight times overall and six straight since the `Canes joined the ACC in 2005.
“Clemson is a really talented team that will likely finish the season in Top 25,” Yaroshuk-Tews added. “A win today was important for us heading into Sunday’s match with Georgia Tech.”
The `Canes jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 24 team of Laura Vallverdu and Farah won 8-6 over the No. 12 team of Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge and after Clemson won at No. 2, Caren Seenauth and Eichkorn won a close 9-8 (5) battle in the third spot over Luc and Ina Hadziselimovic.
Farah took out No. 82 Federica van Adrichem, 6-3, 6-2 in the second position before Eichkorn cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ina Hadziselimovic to put the `Canes up by three. Clemson’s No. 3 Ani Mijacika beat No. 22 Vallverdu, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 to give the Tigers their first point of the day. After Wasilewski clinched the match, Clemson took the No. 5 position before Michala Kissell won a hard-fought 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 match at No. 3 over Estafania Balda.
The Hurricanes will return to the court Sunday at 12 p.m. when they play host to No. 2 Georgia Tech at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter where admission is free to the public.
