No. 11 Hurricanes Sweep Singles Matches Friday

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 11 University of Miami women’s tennis team opened its season Friday afternoon with all seven of the Hurricanes participating in the event coming away with a singles win over opponents from Wichita State at the FGCU/Johan Kriek Classic in Fort Myers.
Sophomore Laura Vallverdu won easily over Stephanie Dalmacio, 6-4, 6-1, while senior Romy Farah defeated Torrie Browning by a similar score of 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Bianca Eichkorn and her opponent, Florentina Hanisch, had a close battle early before Eichkorn eventually pulled away with a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win while fellow freshman Michaela Kissell had a convincing win over Lenore Lazaroiu, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Caren Seenauth took out Anna Egorova, 6-4, 6-4, sophomore Claudia Wasilewski edged out Laryssa Ferreira, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 10-8 and senior Gina Sabatino defeated Olga Elkin, 6-4, 6-3, to complete the afternoon sweep for UM.
The tournament, which is a non-team scoring event that will only count towards individual records, will continue on Saturday with Miami opening the day versus FIU in doubles play at 11 a.m.
