Farah and Seenauth Fall In Doubles Title Match

ATHENS, Ga. – Play concluded Tuesday at the ITA Southern Regional Women’s Tennis Championships at the Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex with the University of Miami doubles team of Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth falling in the “A” doubles championship match to Whitney McCray and Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech, 8-5.
“Caren and Romy came up a little short this weekend in an extremely competitive field,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “They have definitely taken the next step with their game in both singles and doubles. Our program will undoubtedly prosper this season if they keep this level of play consistent throughout the year.”
Earlier in the day, the duo defeated Egle Petrauskaite and Liset Brito of Florida International, 8-1, to advance into the tournament’s doubles final.
Sophomore Claudia Wasilewski finished off a solid week at the event with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory over Florida State’s Federica Suess to claim the “B” singles championship. Wasilewski earned the “B” singles title by defeating five players in the field of 64, including the draw’s top-seeded player in Suess.
“Claudia has been playing like a champ,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I am so proud of what she has accomplished so far this fall. Her hard work and commitment to her tennis is really beginning to pay off.”
The Georgia Tech duo of Kristi Miller and Amanda McDowell squared off in the “A” singles championship match also on Tuesday with McDowell coming away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over her teammate. The Georgia duo of Adrienne Elsberry and Naoko Ueshima claimed the “B” doubles title with an 8-3 win over the USF duo of Jannete Bejkova and Lauren Shumate.
All consolation action was cancelled on Monday due to inclement weather.
The ITA National Indoors, the second collegiate grand slam of the season,will be held on the campus of Ohio State in Columbus, Nov. 1-4. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw. Sophomore All-American Laura Vallverdu will be resprenting UM after qualifying two weeks ago in Los Angeles at the Riviera/ITA All-American Main Draw Championships.
