Farah and Seenauth Reach Doubles Semifinals

ATHENS, Ga. –The University of Miami doubles team of Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth defeated the No.2-seeded Auburn duo of Alex Haney and Melissa Koning, 8-5, Monday to advance into the semifinals at the ITA Southern Regional Women’s Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The duo is moving on to face Florida International’s Egle Petrauskaite and Liset Brito Tuesday morning for a chance to face play in the doubles championship match later in the day.

In the “B” singles bracket, Claudia Wasilewski also won a pair of Monday, defeating FIU’s Maria Spenceley, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round before taking out Yana Kireeva of Mississippi, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to advance into Tuesday’s championship match where she will face Florida State’s Federica Suess. Suess, the top-seeded player in the “B” field, defeated Alabama’s Andrea Brenes, 6-2, 6-3, for the chance to meet Wasilewski in the final.

All-American Laura Vallverdu and Bianca Eichkorn were each eliminated from singles play Monday morning with each falling in the tournament’s quarterfinal round. Vallverdu lost to FSU’s Katie Rybacova 6-3, 6-1, while Eichkorn was edged out, 6-4, 6-3, by No.3-seeded Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, who is moving on to the championship match where she is facing her teammate, top-seeded Kristi Miller.

Play resumes Tuesday beginning with singles finals at 9 a.m. to be followed directly by doubles. All consolation play was cancelled due to rain.
