ATHENS, Ga. – Sophomore Laura Vallverdu and freshman Bianca Eichkorn are moving on into the round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regional Women’s Tennis Championships after each won their first two singles matches Saturday at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Vallverdu defeated Auburn’s Jil Hastenrath in convincing fashion in the second round, 6-1, 6-0 while Eichkorn picked up an impressive 6-0, 6-2 second-round win over Noelle Hickey of Georgia Tech.
In addition to Vallverdu and Eichkorn, Claudia Wasilewski is also advancing into the round of sixteen in the second draw after a 6-4, 6-0 win over Troy’s Mirte De Bakker in the second round.
In first round action earlier on Saturday, Vallverdu advanced after Georgia Tech’s Aleksandra Krupina withdrew due to an injury while Eichkorn easily moved past Florida State’s Jessica Wente, 6-1, 6-0.
Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth also won their first round matches but were knocked out of contention in round two. Farah defeated Florida State’s Jessica Wente, 6-1, 6-0 and Seenauth advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Whitney Chappell of Auburn. In the second round, Farah fell in a hard-fought match to the tournament’s top-seeded player in Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 while Seenauth lost to Georgia Tech’s Maya Johansson, 6-3, 7-5.
Michaela Kissell was the lone Hurricane to drop a first round match, falling 6-2, 7-6 (3) to Auburn’s Melissa Koning.
Wasilewski had reached the second round of the second draw after a first-round bye.
Singles play will resume Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with the continuation of singles play and the start of doubles action. Singles winners will continue on with the start of the round of 16 while play in the consolation bracket will also begin. The first two rounds of doubles play will start up for both the “A” and “B” draws early Sunday morning.
