Hurricanes Press On, Finish Preparations For Maryland Game
Nov. 9, 2006
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Most Thursday practices at the Greentree Practices fields are about the University of Miami preparing for an upcoming opponent. But in the wake of the recent tragic loss of senior defensive tackle Bryan Pata, today’s practice was just as much about healing as it was about getting ready for a game at Maryland on Saturday.
“This was good therapy for us,” head coach Larry Coker said. “There was a little more leisure today than yesterday and we made it through yesterday in good shape. We’re pressing on. This is a tough time, but our kids are very resilient. Again, we have a job to do. We’re going to Maryland and we’re expecting to win.”
Thursday’s practice was not a complete return to normalcy. Players and coaches are still grieving, but there were signs of it being “more normal,” Coker said. “It’s very good to see that,” the coach added. “You see the guys leaving the field and feeling good about themselves, and with an opportunity to play. It’s been a special time for us.
“We talked about how much Bryan Pata would like to have an opportunity to be with us today. It’s a special time for us and it’s very, very good to see that.”
The Hurricanes will wear a black “95” decal on their helmets for the remainder of the season in remembrance of Pata, who wore that number.
Notes: Sophomore quarterback Kirby Freeman is scheduled to make his first career start in place of Kyle Wright (thumb) on Saturday. “Kirby did really well,” Coker said. “I’m encouraged by Kirby. He wanted an opportunity to play and he’s going to get an opportunity. I’ll be really surprised if he doesn’t do well.” … Linebacker Tavares Gooden and offensive tackle Reggie Youngblood will not make the trip due to injury … Tight end Greg Olsen (ankle) and running back Javarris James (hip) both practiced well, Coker said.
