Carrillo And Braun Garner All-American Honors From NCBWA
June 14, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has selected the University of Miami’s Cesar Carrillo to its First Team All-America squad and Ryan Braun to its second team.
Carrillo, a junior, led the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 13-3 record and had a 2.22 ERA. He led the Hurricanes with 127 strikeouts this season against 23 walks and etched his name in the NCAA record books for recording the first 24 decisions of his career as wins, fourth all-time. Carrillo was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year and was also selected to the All-ACC First Team.
Braun, also junior, was named the ACC Player of the Year at third base and led the Hurricanes with 18 home runs, 70 runs, 76 RBIs, a .727 slugging percentage and was second on the team with a .388 average and 16 doubles. He added 23 steals and 10 sacrifice flies in one of the best overall seasons in UM history.
Both will be linked forever in the Miami record books as the first pair of Major League Baseball first-round draft picks in the same season from UM. Braun was the fifth overall selection of the Milwaukee Brewers and Carrillo was taken with the 18th overall pick by the San Diego Padres in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft.
In addition to the NCBWA honor, both Carrillo and Braun are still in the running for several postseason awards. Carrillo is a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to college baseball’s top player by the NCBWA, and for the Second Annual Roger Clemens Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate pitcher. Braun is one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, widely considered as the Heisman Trophy of college baseball.
Miami concluded its season with a 6-3 loss to Nebraska at the Lincoln Super Regional on June 11 and finished with a 41-19-1 record.
