Hurricanes End Season With 6-3 Loss To Nebraska In Lincoln Super Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. – Miami fell behind early against Nebraska and ended its season with a 6-3 loss to the Cornhuskers in front of a record crowd of 8,711 at the 2005 Lincoln Super Regional on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Miami senior starter Brandon Camardese (6-1) was charged with the loss and gave up five earned runs in 2.1 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Nebraska freshman Johnny Dorn improved to 12-1 with 6.1 innings of work, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Brett Jensen picked up his 15th save of the season for the Huskers.

UM sophomore Ricky Orta pitched 4.2 innings of no-hit relief for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes got RBIs Paco Figueroa, Ryan Braun and Jon Jay. Eddy Rodriguez led the Hurricanes with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with a double.

Nebraska wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Third baseman Alex Gordon followed Joe Simokaitis’ one-out soft single in the first inning with a bomb to center field off a 1-0 pitch from Camardese to take a 2-0 lead.

Simokaitis increased the Nebraska lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to left field to lead off the third inning. Camardese loaded the bases with walks to Gordon and Daniel Bruce, and a single to Andy Gerch. Ryan Bohanan knocked Camardese out of the game with a two-run double to put Nebraska up, 5-0.

Orta spelled Camardese and finished the inning.

The Miami bats were silent until Jon Jay went deep to the opposite field in the fourth for his first home run of the season.

Orta was replace by Chris Perez prior to the eighth inning. Bohanan greeted Perez with his first career home run to left field to put Nebraska up 6-1.

Miami closed the gap to 6-3 with a pair of RBI doubles from Paco Figueroa and Ryan Braun in the eighth inning. It was as close as the Hurricanes would come.

Jensen came on for the Huskers with one out in the inning and retired the next five batters he faced to pick up the save and seal victory.
