May 9, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami sophomore catcher Eddy Rodriguez was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance in last week’s three-game sweep of Jacksonville. He joins senior Brendan Katin (April 11) and freshman Alex Garabedian (April 18) as the third Hurricane to win the honor this season.
Rodriguez raised his average from .286 to .336 with a 10-for-12 performance at the plate in the series with a double, two home runs, five runs scored, four RBIs and a 1.417 slugging percentage. Rodriguez’s one-out walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave fourth-ranked Miami a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field and completed a three-game sweep of the Dolphins in the Hurricanes’ final regular-season series at home. Rodriguez capped off a career weekend, going 3-for-4 with a run batted in the win. He went 4-for-5 Saturday with three runs, two RBIs and a home run. On Friday he went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored, including the game-winning run.
The Hurricanes (36-11-1 overall, 17-6-1 ACC), currently second in the ACC standings, take to the road for a crucial pair of series at Virginia this weekend and at Clemson May 19-21.
