Hurricanes Defeat Wake Forest, 11-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami right fielder Paco Figueroa went 4 for 5 and Danny Figueroa and Danny Valencia both hit three-run home runs to lead the sixth-ranked Hurricanes (19-4, 6-1) to a 11-2 win against Wake Forest (9-11, 3-4) Friday afternoon at Gene Hooks Stadium.

Miami starter Cesar Carrillo moved his record to 5-0 this season, giving up six hits and striking out six in seven scoreless innings. Wake Forest starter Tim Morley pitched six innings and gave up 11 hits, nine runs, eight earned runs and struck out four in the loss to drop his record to 0-4 this season. Morley left the game in the sixth inning with an injury to his left arm.

A fielding error by Wake Forest first baseman Ryder Mathias on Paco Figueroa’s bunt single allowed Danny Figueroa to score from second base for a 1-0 UM lead in the first inning. Danny Figueroa struck again in the second with a three-run home run off Morley.

The Hurricanes pulled away with a four-run fourth. Eddy Rodriguez singled, Danny Figueroa reached on an error and Paco Figueroa hit his third bunt single of the day to load the bases with no outs. Sophomore Jon Jay hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Rodriguez to put UM up 5-0. Valencia stepped to the plate and crushed his second home run of the year to left field to score the Figueroas for an 8-0 score.

Freshman designated hitter Alex Garabedian hit a bases-loaded single off Wake reliever Matt Hammond in the seventh to score Brendan Katin and Rodriguez followed with a sac fly to right to bring in Walter Diaz. Paco Figueroa singled to bring in Roger Tomas from third to complete the scoring and push the lead to 11-0.

Wake Forest scored two unearned runs off junior reliever Andrew Lane in the eighth inning. Sophomore Danny Gil pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish the game for Miami.

Miami and Wake Forest resume their series on Saturday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m.
