Hurricanes Pound Out 13-2 Win Against Rutgers

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami starter Brandon Camardese pitched five scoreless innings and 11 Hurricanes collected hits in a 13-2 win against Rutgers in front of 1,946 Wednesday night at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes (18-4, 5-1 ACC) extended their winning streak to six games, while the Scarlet Knights dropped to 6-7.
Camardese moved his record to 2-0 on the season and allowed only two hits while striking out three. Rutgers starter Aaron Kalb was charged with the loss and gave up seven runs on 10 hits in three and two-thirds innings.
Sophomore first baseman Danny Valencia led the 17-hit Miami attack, going 4-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Left fielder Jon Jay scored three runs and batted in another three, and senior Brendan Katin hit his third home run of the season.
Katin’s one-out homer in the second to key a four-run inning. Walter Diaz, Roger Tomas, Eddy Rodriguez and Danny Figueroa followed with consecutive singles, the last of which scored Diaz for a 2-0 lead. Paco Figueroa reached base on a fielder’s choice to score Tomas. Ryan Braun singled to right to bring in Eddy Rodriguez for the early 4-0 lead.
Jay hit a two-RBI single and scored on Valencia’s single for a three-run fourth inning. Diaz scored from third on a double-play ball hit by Rodriguez in the fifth for an 8-0 lead. The Hurricanes scored one run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to build a 13-0 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Redshirt freshman Scott Maine made his college debut in relief of Camardese in the sixth, giving up a hit but holding RU scoreless. Juniors Andrew Lane and Jon McLean, and senior Vince Bongiovanni each pitched an inning of relief to finish the game.
Rutgers put two runs on the board in the eighth on Frank Meade’s RBI double and an RBI by John Defendis to provide the 13-2 final score.
Miami heads to Wake Forest for its first-ever ACC road series. The games will be played on Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
