Replica Stadium Giveaway Announced
Jan. 4, 2005
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami has announced that a Mark Light Field miniature replica has commissioned in time for the 2005 baseball season. The first 3,000 fans through the gates of the April 23rd Miami vs. FSU game will receive the replica, courtesy of Chispa’s & The Pharmed Group. Game time is set for 7 pm, with gates opening at 5:30.The replica will serve as a reminder to the history of Mark Light Field, set to undergo renovation following the conclusion of the 2005 season.
In 1971, former Miami Coach Ron Fraser set out to build a state-of-the-art college baseball field and Hurricane supporter George Light came forward with the funding. In 1974, when more assistance was needed, Light again was the savior. His sizable donation to build permanent concrete stands was matched by longtime friends of the Miami program.Light never got to see the Hurricanes reach the College World Series. He died shortly after that second donation as the Hurricanes finished second in their first CWS. The field, dedicated in 1977, is named for Light’s son, Mark, who died of muscular dystrophy.
On October 10, 2002, a $3.9 million gift to the University of Miami was announced by then Texas Rangers All-Star & current New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez. The gift was to be used to fund an annual scholarship, in perpetuity, at the University for a member of the Boys & Girls Club of America as well as to kick-off a stadium renovation campaign for the University’s baseball team.
The gift was the largest ever to the University of Miami baseball program, and kicked off the Baseball Stadium Renovation Project. Upon its construction, the University will name the newly renovated facility Alex Rodriguez Park. The naming will serve as a daily reminder to all who visit the Park of the impact Rodriguez has had on his hometown. To purchase your 2005 season please call 305-284-CANES in Dade or toll free at 1-800-GO-CANES.
