Greg Lovelady Accepts Assistant Coaching Position with Wright State

Sept. 8, 2004

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Greg Lovelady, Miami’s volunteer assistant baseball coach for the past three seasons, accepted an assistant coaching position with Wright State University on Wednesday.

“The past seven years at the University of Miami, as both a player and a coach, laid the groundwork for my future in baseball,” Lovelady said. “The experience I received while at Miami will be invaluable to me as my coaching career progresses. I especially want to thank Coach Morris, Gino DiMare and J.D. Arteaga for their help and advice.”

Lovelady will serve as the Raiders pitching and catching coach, while also handling the recruiting coordinator duties. Wright State is led by new Head Coach Rob Cooper, who took over the Raiders’ program in July. Cooper served on the Miami staff as the volunteer assistant coach in 1994 and 1995.

“I am very excited about joining Coach Cooper’s staff at Wright State,” Lovelady said. “I am looking forward to the chance to working with the Raiders’ pitching staff and catchers, while also hitting the recruiting trail.”

Lovelady, who caught both the Hurricanes’ 1999 and 2001 National Championship games, spent the past three seasons coaching the Miami catchers.

Lovelady tutored former UM catcher Erick San Pedro from a virtual unknown into a second-round draft pick of the Montreal Expos during his time with Miami. San Pedro’s final season with the Hurricanes in 2004 was one of the best seasons by a Miami catcher in school history.

“Greg did an outstanding job coaching our catchers over the past three seasons,” Miami Head Coach Jim Morris said. “He was also a great player for us, helping us win two national titles as a catcher and as a team co-captain.

“Greg was a volunteer assistant coach, and although we are going to miss him, the full-time assistant position at Wright State is a great opportunity for him to advance his coaching career.”

Lovelady was a four-year letterman for Hurricanes from 1998-2001. He graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelors of Arts degree in business adminstration in 2001. Lovelady then signed a free agent deal with the Florida Marlins and spent one season with the Class A Utica Blue Sox.
