Hurricanes Capture All-America Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Just off of a 50-13 campaign and a fifth-place finish in the College World Series, several Hurricanes were honored on Friday with various All-America awards.
Jim Burt, earned third-team All-America honors by Baseball America on Friday, and also signed a professional contract with the New York Mets. The Allendale, N.J., native was the 19th-round draft choice of the Mets earlier this month after hitting .371 with 14 home runs and 73 RBI. He finished his Miami career ranked in the top 10 in nine different offensive categories. Burt was also a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball last week.
Cesar Carrillo, a sophomore right-hander from Chicago, was also named a third-team All-American by Baseball America. Carrillo went 12-0 on the year with a 2.69 ERA in 113.2 innings of work. He was also named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball last week.
Miami also had two first-team freshman All-Americans by Baseball America with outfielder Jon Jay and right-handed closer Danny Gil. The Hurricanes were one of only two teams to have two freshman All-Americans, joining Texas Christian.
Jay and Gil are both Miami natives and graduates of Columbus High School. Jay finished third on the team in hitting with a .368 average. He also hit six home runs and drove in 56 RBI. Jay’s 86 hits were the second most on the team, and he finished with 51 runs scored and 19 stolen bases.
Gil emerged from a long relief position in the bullpen in late April to take over as the Hurricanes closers. He finished the year with an 8-0 record and five saves and a 3.03 ERA in 38.2 innings of work. He struck out 49 and held opponents to a .177 batting average.
