Hurricanes Explode For 25 Hits in 22-3 Win Over No. 15 Virginia

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The fourth-ranked Miami Hurricanes exploded for a season-high 25 hits in a 22-3 win over 15th-ranked Virginia Saturday night at Mark Light Field in front of 1,691 fans.

Head Coach Jim Morris’ club improved to 30-8 on the season with the series-clinching win. The Cavaliers drop their second straight to fall to 34-9 after bringing a school-record 14-game winning streak into the series.

Every Hurricanes’ starter collected at least one hit on the night while Brendan Katin added three hits off the bench including a tape-measure three-run home run. Richard Giannotti went 3 for 3 with five RBI, three runs scored and three walks.

Not to be forgotten, Brian Barton, Gaby Sanchez, Erick San Pedro and Joey Hooft all collected three hits apiece in the 19-run win over the ACC-leading Cavaliers.

Cesar Carrillo went five innings on the mound to improve to 7-0 on the season. The sophomore right-hander gave up two runs on five hits while striking out two. Carrillo’s seven wins lead the Hurricanes’ pitching staff.

The Hurricanes threw the knock-out punch in the first inning with six runs on five hits and two Virginia errors. Giannotti’s two-RBI triple and RBI singles from Joey Hooft and Jon Jay highlighted the inning.

Miami added two more runs in the second inning to open up an 8-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Barton scored the inning’s first run after Jim Burt had tripled. San Pedro then followed with a RBI single two batters later.

UVa got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI double off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman.

Miami used the long ball in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 12-1 on home runs by Sanchez and San Pedro. It was Sanchez’s fourth home run of the season and San Pedro’s seventh.

UM added a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning before Virginia added an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Katin brought the Miami crowd to their feet with a mammoth home run over the scoreboard in left field. It was his sixth home run of the season and gave the Hurricanes a 17-3 lead.

UM continued to pour it on with four more runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Giannotti.

The Hurricanes and Cavaliers conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
