CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The fourth-ranked Miami Hurricanes snapped 15th-ranked Virginia’s school-record 14-game winning streak with a 8-0 victory in front of 2,104 fans a Mark Light Field Friday night.

Jim Burt celebrated his 23rd birthday with two hits, including his ninth home run of the season, and two RBI. Richard Giannotti added two hits and two RBI as well.

The Hurricanes improve to 29-8 on the season, while Virginia falls to 34-8.

J.D. Cockroft (4-3) turned in his longest outing of the season with 7.2 innings and shut the Cavaliers down, allowing no runs and only three hits to earn his fourth win of the season. Cockroft has now pitched 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings after holding FSU scoreless last Friday.

Andrew Dobies took the loss for Virginia with to fall to 6-1 on the season. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Burt’s hot bat continued at the plate with a two-run home run in the third inning. It was his second hit of the game after singling in the first inning. The home run was Burt’s team-leading ninth of the season and gave him 51 RBI on.

The Hurricanes followed with back-to-back infield singles from Brian Barton and Gaby Sanchez and then loaded the bases with a Richard Giannotti walk. Erick San Pedro drove in UM’s third run with a single deep in the hole at shortstop.

Giannotti added a RBI single in the fifth inning and took second base on a errant throw by the Cavaliers’ right-fielder Matt Street. The error pushed another run across the plate as the Hurricanes extended their lead to 5-0.

Miami tacked on three run in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach at 8-0.

The Hurricanes and Cavaliers return to the field on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game at Mark Light Field. UM right-hander Cesar Carrillo (6-0) will go to the mound against UVa’s Matt Avery (4-1).
