Camardese and Hurricanes Shut Down Seminoles, 4-0
April 11, 2004
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Miami’s Brandon Camardese and George Huguet combined for a two-hit shutout of 13th-ranked Florida State Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in front of 2,762 fans.
The shutout was Miami’s first in Tallahassee in the 120 games played in Dick Howser Stadium and it marked UM’s first shutout of the Seminoles in 10 years.
Camardese was virtually untouchable in 6.2 innings of work. The junior left-hander allowed only one hit, a seventh inning single to Shane Robinson, while striking out three. Huguet came on to earn his eighth save of the season with 2.1 innings.
The fifth-ranked Hurricanes improve to 26-7 on the season and claim their first series win over Florida State since 2001.
Richard Giannotti paced the Hurricanes’ nine-hit attack off the bench with two singles and a RBI. Paco Figueroa also added two singles and drove in two runs. Jon Jay collected two hits, including the only extra-base hit of the day for either team.
Giannotti pinch hit for Brendan Katin in the fourth inning and sparked the Hurricanes with a single down the right-field line. The base knock was the first hit for Giannotti since a single against Elon on March 6, snapping a 0-for-14 slump.
Roger Tomas, subbing for injured shortstop Ryan Braun, followed with a single through the right side. Figueroa scored Tomas with a sacrifice fly and Jon Jay followed with a RBI double down the right-field line to give UM a 2-0 lead.
Florida State broke finally through Camardese’s armor in the seventh inning as Robinson lined the first pitch of the inning into left field for a single. After Camardese had recorded two outs with runners on first and second base, Morris made the call to the bullpen for Huguet.
Huguet would get FSU pinch hitter Derrick Smith to ground out to Jim Burt on his second pitch to retire the side.
Giannotti continued to prove to be a great decision driving home the Hurricanes’ third run of the game in the seventh inning with a single through the left side to score Adam Ricks who walked to leadoff the inning.
Figueroa followed with a two-out RBI single to right field to score Gaby Sanchez who also drew a walk.
Florida State and Miami move the series to Coral Gables next weekend with games at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 16, and Saturday, April 17, and then conclude the six-game home-and-home series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, April 18. All three games will be broadcast live on the Sunshine Network.
