TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Cesar Carrillo overcame a rough first inning to pitch seven brilliant innings and lead fifth-ranked Miami to a 17-11 win over No. 13 Florida State in front of the second-largest crowd (6,387) in Dick Howser Stadium history.

The win improves head coach Jim Morris’ Hurricanes to 25-7 on the season and evens the series with the Seminoles. Florida State falls to 26-10 on the season.

Carrillo struck out five in his seven innings of work, while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and walking two. Carrillo allowed only two hits after the Seminoles’ four-run first inning where they picked up five hits. Matt Sauls took the loss for FSU to fall to 3-2 on the season.

Paco Figueroa led the way with three hits, four runs scored and three RBI. Jon Jay, Ryan Braun, Jim Burt, Adam Ricks and Erick San Pedro all collected two hits in Miami’s 15 hit attack.

FSU’s four-spot in the first inning was highlighted by back-to-back solo home runs from Stephen Drew and Eddy Martinez-Esteve. FSU was aided by two Miami errors in the inning.

The Hurricanes tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good at 6-4. Figueroa drove home all three runs with a bases-clearing double to right field.

Miami got on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning to pull within 4-3. Braun ripped a two-RBI single up the middle and Burt singled home the third run.

UM continued to see threes in the fifth inning as the Hurricanes increased their lead to 9-4 on a two-RBI single by San Pedro and a RBI ground out by Ricks.

Figueroa manufactured Miami’s 10th run of the night with his legs. After reaching on an error by FSU second baseman Bryan Zech, Figueroa swiped both second and third base before scoring on Jon Jay’s sacrifice fly to left field.

Miami put the Seminoles away with five runs in the seventh inning that was highlighted by RBI singles from Brendan Katin and Jay.

FSU broke a string of 15 unanswered runs with two runs in the eighth inning.

The Seminoles tacked on five runs in the ninth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Drew, his fourth of the series.

Florida State and Miami conclude the Tallahassee portion of the two team’s six-game series with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium. Miami and FSU play three games in Coral Gables beginning on Friday, April 16, at Mark Light Field.
