Carrillo Pitches Hurricanes Past Rutgers, 12-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — The sixth-ranked Miami Hurricanes won their ninth straight game Friday evening, 12-2, over Rutgers in front of 2,443 fans at Mark Light Field.
The Hurricanes improve to 13-3 on the season with an 11-hit attack and a masterful start by right-handed pitcher Cesar Carrillo. The sophomore improves to 2-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.18 for the season. Carrillo struck out three, while allowing seven hits and two runs.
Shawn Valdes-Fauli pitched two innings in relief, while Chris Perez pitched the ninth to close out the game. For the second straight game the UM pitching staff did not issue a walk.
Jon Jay went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored. Erick San Pedro added three hits as well with two doubles a RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Braun and Jim Burt both added two RBI apiece.
The Hurricanes also continued their aggressive style on the base paths, stealing seven bases on the night. Miami has now stolen 50 bases on 57 attempts this season.
Miami jumped out early on the Scarlet Knights with three runs in the second inning. Brendan Katin led the inning off with a walk and stole second base before Gaby Sanchez singled him home.
Sanchez would then come around to score on Erick San Pedro’s double to left-center field. Jon Jay drove in UM’s third run with his second single of the night, scoring Paco Figueroa.
Rutgers tallied one run in the top of the third inning with a double from Jason Grover and a RBI single from Graig Badger.
The Scarlet Knights added another run, 3-2, in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Colin Gaynor scoring Jeff Frazier from second base. Frazier led off the inning with a double into centerfield.
Miami answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs on five hits highlighted by two-run doubles by Ryan Braun and Jim Burt. Joey Hooft contributed with a RBI single scoring San Pedro, who led off the inning with his second double of the game.
The Hurricanes extended the lead, 12-2, in the seventh inning on two RBI singles by Paco Figueroa and Brian Barton, an RBI walk to Adam Ricks, and a balk. The inning also included two hit batters and two walks.
The Hurricanes and Scarlet Knights return to the diamond Saturday at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field. ESPN’s Harold Reynolds will throw out Saturday’s first pitch.
