Camardese Pitches Six Strong Innings as the Hurricanes Bury Tennessee, 14-3

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team capitalized on Tennessee’s school-record eight errors, to score 14 runs, giving Miami a 14-3 series-clinching victory in front of 2,730 fans Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field.
Miami starter Brandon Camardese (1-0) recorded the win going six strong innings, giving up six hits, two runs (both earned) and walking one batter, while striking out three.
Senior first baseman Jim Burt led the Miami offense going 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman outfielder Jon Jay contributed with two hits and two runs scored.
The Hurricanes took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning highlighted by a Jim Burt two-run bases-clearing triple to left center, scoring Ryan Braun and Joey Hooft. Burt scored the third run on Gaby Sanchez’ RBI ground out.
The Volunteers cut the lead, 3-1, in the third inning on Brian Cleveland’s single back to the mound scoring Josh Alley from third base. Alley led off with a single to right field, moved to second on a walk and advanced to third on an error by the shortstop.
The Hurricanes extended the lead, 4-1, in the bottom of half of the third inning on an error by the pitcher. After Burt doubled to right field, Sanchez singled off the leg of Tennessee pitcher Sean Watson, forcing a wild throw to first base, allowing Burt to score and Sanchez to reach third.
Miami blew the game open in the fifth inning, 10-1, taking advantage of four Tennessee errors to score six runs on four hits. The Volunteers recorded a school-record eight errors in the game, while shortstop Brian Cleveland finished with a school-record four errors on the day.
Tennessee added one run in the sixth and another in the ninth, but fell short, 14-3, as they dropped to 4-2 on the season, while the Hurricanes improve to 4-2 in 2004.
Miami is back in action when they travel to face cross-town rival Florida International Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. on the FIU campus at University Park. The Hurricanes will then venture to Homestead for games against FIU on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. and LaSalle on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Homestead Complex. UM will then return home for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 29, at Mark Light Field against Minnesota.
