Nov. 13, 2003
Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team was named the 10th-best dynasty in college sports history in the latest edition of Sports Illustrated “On Campus.”
The Hurricanes have qualified for the NCAA Tournament an NCAA-record 31 consecutive years, and have advanced to the College World Series 20 times, winning four titles.
Under current Head Coach Jim Morris, UM has advanced to the CWS in eight of 10 years, winning national championships in 1999 and 2001. During that time, Morris has led Miami to 10 consecutive NCAA Regional titles, which is also an NCAA record.
The Hurricanes first advanced into the postseason in 1971. Miami made its first College World Series appearance in 1974, advancing to the championship game before falling, 7-3, to the vaunted Southern California Trojans.
UM made its most recent trip to the College World Series last season, as a young and experienced group rallied late in the season to finish in a tie for fifth at the CWS.
North Carolina’s women’s soccer program heads the list of the all time great college sports dynasties. The Tar Heels have won 17 of a possible 22 national championships.
The Hurricanes open the 2004 regular season on Friday, Feb. 13, with a three-game series against the Florida Gators at Mark Light Field. Prior to that, the Hurricanes will welcome back former players for the annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m.
