Miami Football Practice Report - Wednesday, August 6, 2003

Aug. 6, 2003

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami football team conducted its third full practice of the 2003 season under the hot sun Wednesday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields.

The Hurricanes practiced for two hours in shorts and shoulder pads and head coach Larry Coker was pleased with the team’s progress.

“This is a great day for practice,” said Coker. “The defense played extremely hard today, made some plays, and I saw a lot of progress there. Offensively, we need to get a lot tougher up front on the offensive line; the defense is getting too much penetration. If we are as good as I think we can be on defense, then we will be a great team.”

Coker was pleased with the work of the special teams, particularly the progress of freshman punter Brian Monroe.

“Today he punted with some pressure and I thought he performed pretty well,” Coker said. “Punting coaches were really high on Monroe, and he hasn’t disappointed me. He’s a great athlete, played in the secondary and returned an interception for a touchdown in an all-star game.

UM will return to the practice field on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Workouts will remain open to the public through Aug. 13. The Hurricanes will continue with one-a-day workouts through Friday, Aug. 8. Miami’s first two-a-day practice is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
