Hurricanes Wrap up Second Day of Fall Practice
Aug. 5, 2003
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami football team conducted its second full practice of the 2003 season in a light rain Tuesday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields.
The Hurricanes practiced for two hours in shorts and shoulder pads and Coach Coker was pleased with the team’s progress.
“We had a good practice today,” said Coker. “I was impressed with the running backs, (Tyrone) Moss, (Frank) Gore, and (Jarrett) Payton. Defensively, the linebackers have been impressive, but on defense it is hard to tell without pads because they are limited as to what the can do. Overall it was a better day and I hope we continue to improve.”
The Hurricanes were forced to delay the scheduled 3:30 practice 45 minutes due to severe weather in the area.
“Good thing we had a weather coach because we were able to adjust,” Head Coach Larry Coker said. “Fortunately the rain and more important the lighting cooperated with us, and we were able to get a good workout in.”
Coach Coker mentioned that two former walk-ons, Javon Nanton and Tannard Davis had been given scholarships, “Javon and Tannard were track guys, but they are also good football players,sa so we decided to put them on a football scholarship.”UM will return to the practice field on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Workouts will remain open to the public through Aug. 13. The Hurricanes will continue with one-a-day workouts through Friday, Aug. 8. Miami’s first two-a-day practice is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
