Hurricanes Open 2003 With First Practice
Aug. 4, 2003
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami football team opened the 2003 season with its first practice on Monday afternoon with a two-hour session in shorts and helmets at the Greentree Practice Facility.
“Everybody is excited to be out here today, especially the coaches and the players,” Head Coach Larry Coker said. “We are a little ragged in some areas, and we are not as fluid as we’re going to be. It was a really outstanding first day.
Coker was pleased with the progress the Hurricanes made over the summer.
“I think we’re a lot further along than we were in the spring, and I really liked some things that I saw today,” Coker said. “We’re going to have to catch the ball better than we did today, but all in all it was a good first day.”
Miami was faced with a new schedule during fall practice this season with the NCAA’s new restrictions on fall workouts. Both the newcomers and veterans reported on Sunday and went through their first practice together.
“I really don’t mind the schedule, the only think I don’t like is outsiders making the schedule,” Coker said. “I think coaches should be able to make their own schedules. It’s not a bad schedule, there’s nothing wrong with it, and we’ll make it work.”
UM will return to the practice field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Workouts will remain open to the public through Aug. 13. The Hurricanes will continue with one-a-day workouts through Friday, Aug. 8. Miami’s first two-a-day practice is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
