Miami's Burt Taken in 35th Round of the MLB Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami first baseman Jim Burt was taken in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Wednesday afternoon by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Burt, a redshirt junior from Allendale, N.J., was the only Hurricanes selected in this year’s draft on a squad that is filled with freshman and sophomores.

The two-time captain is hitting .309 on the season with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs. Burt made the switch to first base this year and played excellent defense for the Hurricanes.

Burt is a two-time Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District III selection and earned second -team Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors last week. He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in fiance on May 9, 2003. He is a lifetime .307 hitter in his three seasons at the University of Miami. Burt does have one year of eligibility remaining at Miami.
