OFF TO A FAST START
The 28 points scored in the first quarter were the most scored in an opening period since Oct. 11, 1986 in a win over West Virginia (58-14), when the Hurricanes had opened up to another 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The 42-0 halftime score was the most points scored in a half since Miami had a 49-14 halftime lead vs. Rutgers on Oct. 14, 1995, ending in a 56-21 win. In the 2001 National Championship season, Miami outscored opponents 273-33 in the first half. The last time the Hurricanes had such a large lead was when they took a 42-0 halftime lead over Cincinnati on Oct. 7, 1989.
FIRST-TIME STARTERS
The Miami Hurricanes had 12 first-time starters vs. FAMU, six on offense and six on defense. Starting in their first game on defense were Antrel Rolle (DB), Sean Taylor (DB), Greg Threat (DB), Glenn Sharpe (DB), Maurice Sikes (DB) and Vince Wilfork (DT). On offense, Willis McGahee (RB), Quadtrine Hill (FB),Veron Carey (OT), Carlos Joseph (OT), Chris Myers (OG) and Kellen Winslow (TE).
Senior Matt Walters’ start at DE is his first at the defensive end position. Prior to that he had 15 starts at DT including all 12 in the 2001 season.
Eight true freshmen received playing time in tonight’s game – Marc Guillon (QB), Brandon Meriweather (DB), Greg Threat (DB), Glenn Sharpe (DB), Jon Peattie (K), Akieem Jolla (WR), Sinorice Moss (WR), and Eric Winston (TE)…QB Marc Guillon and Akieem Jolla connected on their first UM touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
START THE SACK ATTACK
Following a season where the Hurricanes defense recorded 39 sacks, William Joseph got things started in the first quarter recording his 11th of his career. Matt Walters followed on the next play with a sack of his own, the 9th of his career. Walter recorded another sack in the half giving him 10 total…Vince Wilfork recorded his second sack of his career…The Hurricanes defense recorded 6 sacks in the first half.
Andrew Williams forced a fumble to end the first half and Antrel Rolle recovered his first fumble of his career…Jarrell Weaver recorded the first interception of the season for the Hurricanes, it was also the first of his career.
ROCKING THE RATTLERS
Tonight’s victory is the fifth consecutive over Florida A&M, since FAMU beat the Hurricanes 16-13 in 1979 in Tallahassee. Miami had not allowed a FAMU touchdown in 21consecutive quarters, before FAMU scored two TDs in the fourth quarter.
FAMU’s 17 points scored in tonight’s game is the most the Rattlers have scored against UM in their six meetings, including a 16-13 win in 1979.
Miami extends its nation-leading win streak to 23 games and its Orange Bowl win streak to 17 games, second to Nebraska (21 games going into tonight’s game).
PLAYER NOTES:
DORSEY DISTRIBUTES
To start off his 2002 campaign, senior QB Ken Dorsey hit 3 different receivers for TD passes – Kellen Winslow, Andre Johnson and Ethenic Sands…Dorsey now has 61 TDs in his Miami career, 15 of them being thrown to tight ends…He is now nine completions short of tying Bernie Kosar for second place on the all-time pass completions list at 463.
GREAT DAY FOR GEATHERS
Junior Jason Geathers scored 2 rushing TDs giving him four in his career…Geathers’ 199 rushing yards on 22 carries is a career high and 4th best for an individual game. Edgerrin James rushed for 299 yards vs. UCLA on 39 carries in 1998.
SUPER SIEVERS
Todd Sievers punted tonight for the first time in his Miami career…Sievers also moved into 6th place on the all-time points scored list with his 9 extra points, giving him a total 213…He ties Andy Crosland (1998) for first place on the Points after Touchdown list in an individual game with 9 PATs…
Punter Freddie Capshaw did not punt due to a bruised right (punting) foot….Red shirt freshman place kicker Mark Gent kicked off for the first time in his collegiate career and true freshman punter/kicker Jon Peattie punted for the first time in his collegiate career.
RECEIVERS ROLL
Andre Johnson recorded his 12th career TD tying him with Bubba Franks and James Cox for 7th place on the all-time TD passes caught list.
Ethenic Sands and Roscoe Parrish both returned punts for the first time in their careers. Sands scored the 3rd touchdown of his career.
Kellen Winslow, Jr. caught the first touchdown pass of his career….Roscoe Parrish scored his first two career TDs at Miami – one on a reverse play and the second on a reception from Derrick Crudup to close out the first half.
ODDS and ENDS
The 68,548 is the highest attendance for a Miami/FAMU game since 1992 when 74,292 saw Miami defeat A&M 38-0 at the Orange Bowl…Four different UM quarterbacks received playing time – Dorsey, Crudup, Ortega and Guillon…Larry Coker remains undefeated as the head coach of Miami extending his record to 13-0…Willis McGahee kicked off the 2002 season with the fourth rushing TD of his career. McGahee also spent time at fullback as Jason Geathers received playing time at tail back.
