Soccer Opens Season With 7-0 Win Over Stetson

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Sophomore Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) opened the season with a hat trick to lead the University of Miami women’s soccer team to a 7-0 victory over visiting Stetson Friday night at Cobb Stadium.
Butcher scored the first two goals of the match for Miami at 4:41 and 24:29 on assists from Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Nina Ghoniem (Weston, Fla.).
“I am very pleased with the team started this game,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “It was a great way to start the season and set the tone for the year.”
Anik Huffman (Winter Park, Fla.) put the Hurricanes (1-0-0) up 3-0 at halftime as she scored an unassisted goal at 34:02.
Newcomer Lindsey Yach (Carrollton, Texas) scored back-to-back goals to open the second half. Matthews assisted the first goal by Yach at 51:39, while Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Allison McWhinney (Danvers, Mass.) assisted the second goal at 67:57.
Jenna Johnson (Countyrside, Ill.) scored the sixth goal of the match for Miami on an assist from newcomer Meredith Kramon (Larkspur, Calif.) at 78:36.
Butcher rounded out the scoring tallying the first hat trick of her career on an unassisted goal at 82:16.
Miami goalkeeper Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.) played 90 minutes with three saves on the night.
The Hurricanes took 28 shots compared to five for the Hatters (0-1-0). Miami recorded four corner kicks, while Stetson took two.
Miami is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. playing host to South Florida.
