Baseball Falls 11-9 In 11 Innings To Jacksonville

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball team (25-26) fell to visiting Jacksonville (26-27), 11-9, in 11 innings in front of 1,560 fans Friday night at Mark Light Stadium.

After seven lead changes, Chad Hauseman hit the eventual game-winning three-run homerun to left field giving the Dolphins an 11-8 lead in the top of the 10th inning. The Hurricanes scored once in the bottom half, but for the third straight inning left two runners on base.

Jacksonville reliever Josh Deel (2-2) scored the win pitching the final 5.0 innings in relief, with five hits, an unearned run, four walks and five strikeouts.

Miami took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth with closer George Huguet on the mound, but with one out Phil Nover tied the game with a solo home run to right field. Huguet fell to 6-3 on the season.

In the top of the 11th, Hauseman hit his second home run of the game to left field also scoring B.J. Weed, who singled, and Nover, who was intentionally walked, to give JU the 11-8 lead.

The Hurricanes took their final lead in the game, 8-7, in the seventh when Javy Rodriguez scored from third off a Danny Matienzo ground out. Rodriguez led off the inning with single to left, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Kevin Howard

Hurricane starter Dan Touchet took a no-decision going five innings, giving up six hits, six runs (five earned), two walks, seven strikeouts and two hit batters. His counterpart Kris Regas also took a no-decision going six innings, giving up 12 hits, seven earned runs, one walk, striking out five and one wild pitch.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring, 1-0, in the first inning on Kevin Howard’s RBI ground out that scored Brad Safchik from third. With one out, Safchik singled to left field then stole second and moved to third on a Regas wild pitch.

Miami went ahead, 2-0, in the second on Greg Dini’s RBI double to right center that scored Jim Burt from first. A batter earlier, Burt singled to centerfield.

Jacksonville erased Miami’s lead, 3-2, in the fourth on Jarvis Fraser’s three-run homer to left center. Fraser’s home run scored Nover, singled, and Hauseman, walked.

Miami answered in the bottom of the fourth, 4-3, scoring two runs on four hits to regain the lead. Matienzo doubled to right center to score Howard from first. Howard had reached on an infield single to third base. Later in the inning, Dini singled to left field scoring Richard Giannotti from third, with Burt moving to second. Giannotti singled to left field and moved to second when the throw from the outfield went to home plate. Burt’s fielder’s choice grounder allowed Giannotti to move to third, but Matienzo was out at home on the play.

JU responded in the fifth, 6-4, taking back the lead with three runs off Touchet. Jason Hurst led off with a walk. B.J. Weed then hit into a fielder’s grounder with Hurst reaching second on a throwing error by Touchet. Oliva followed with a two-RBI double to right field scoring both runners while moving to third on the play. He would score on Nover’s sacrifice fly to left field.

The Hurricanes cut the lead, 6-5, in the fifth on a Matienzo RBI double to left field scoring Howard from second. Earlier, Howard hit a two-out double to left field.

Miami added two more runs, 7-6, in the sixth on a Paco Figueroa two-run homerun to left field scoring Burt from first. Burt led off the inning with a single through the middle.

The Dolphins tied the game, 7-7, in the seventh on a Hauseman two-out solo-homer to center field.

Miami continues the series with Jacksonville on Saturday at 7 p.m. The series conclusion is on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard over the Internet at www.hurricanesports.com or on the student voice of the Hurricanes, WVUM 90.5 FM.

The Hurricanes’ flagship station Sports Radio 560 WQAM will also be carrying the remaining two games over the weekend. For Saturday, May 18, the entire game will be broadcast on WQAM. The Sunday, May 19, game will start on WQAM at 1 p.m. and make a jump to WKAT 1360 AM at 3:30 p.m.

Fox Sports Net Florida will televise the Sunday game against Jacksonville.
