Baseball Falls To Bethune-Cookman 3-1

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Saturday’s game between Miami and Bethune-Cookman turned into a pitcher’s battle with the Wildcats’ Helpiz Moises leading B-CC (35-19) to a 3-1 victory over the Hurricanes (23-23) Saturday night in front of 1,062 fans at Mark Light Stadium.
Moises (9-3) pitched his seventh complete game of the season for the win and allowed one earned run on four hits, seven walks, three strikeouts and two hit batters. The four Miami hits off him were a season-low by the Hurricanes. Bethune-Cookman held UM hitless the final six innings.
UM starter Kiki Bengochea (3-6), who had a solid game on the mound, tied his season-long with 7.0 innings pitched and recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, but allowed three earned runs on four hits, two walks, a wild pitch and a hit batter in the loss. Bengochea gave up solo home runs in the first and second and a RBI double in the fourth.
The five B-CC hits in the game tied a season-low allowed by the UM pitching staff, along with the five vs. Northwestern on March 26. The Hurricanes left seven on base in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and seventh innings.
The Bethune-Cookman victory was the first over the Hurricanes in 11 all-time meetings since the 1983 season. Sunday’s game will decide the weekend series after UM slugged its way to a 12-4 win Friday night.
Bethune-Cookman started quickly scoring two runs over the first two innings off solo home runs to left field from Wes Timmons in the first and Alberto Meran in the second.
Miami’s Jim Burt narrowed the Wildcat lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left center.
B-CC upped its lead to 3-1 in the fourth as Jose Vazquez scored from third on a Carlos Lara double down the left field line. With one out, Vazquez was hit by a Bengochea pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Vazquez took third on Meran’s ground out to second base.
